How to Verify Your Laptop Is Genuine

A step-by-step guide to checking serial numbers, warranty status, and authenticity before — or after — you buy.

Buying a new laptop is a significant investment. In a market with many sellers, it’s natural to want confirmation that your machine is genuinely new and not refurbished or misrepresented. As direct importers of HP, Lenovo, ASUS, and Dell, ASES Tech believes in giving customers the tools to verify their own purchase — independently, without needing to take our word for it.

1

Locate Your Serial Number

Every genuine laptop carries a unique serial number (S/N) assigned by the manufacturer. You can find it in three places:

  • Physical sticker: Check the bottom panel of the laptop. Most brands place a label here with the S/N, P/N (Product Number), and model name.
  • Original box: If you still have the packaging, the serial number is printed on the barcode label on the side of the box.
  • On-screen check: If the laptop is powered on, press the Windows key, type cmd, hit Enter, then run wmic csproduct get name, identifyingnumber. Your serial number appears under “IdentifyingNumber.”

2

Check the Official Manufacturer Website

Once you have the serial number, go directly to the manufacturer’s own support portal — this is the most reliable proof of authenticity available, independent of any seller.

Enter your serial number. If the unit is genuine, the page will display the exact model details and a manufacturing/registration record. If the serial number returns no result at all, contact your seller immediately.

One thing to expect, not worry about: the manufacturer’s site may show your warranty as registered to the country the unit was originally imported from, rather than Bangladesh. This is normal for directly imported units and does not mean the laptop is used or non-genuine. Your local warranty coverage and service is handled directly through ASES Tech regardless of what region appears on the manufacturer’s page.

Watch for Refurbished Indicators

Some machines are refurbished but sold as new. A few red flags to check for:

  • Windows SKU check: Open System Information (run msinfo32 from the Run dialog). An “R” or unusual character before the hash in the product SKU can sometimes indicate a refurbished unit, though this isn’t a definitive test on its own.
  • Factory seals: A genuine, unopened unit has clean, intact factory seals. Broken seals, re-taping, or mismatched packaging are signs worth questioning before purchase.

4

Why Buying from a Direct Importer Matters

At ASES Tech, we import HP, Lenovo, ASUS, and Dell products directly — cutting out layers of local distribution. That means:

  • Every unit we stock is brand new, with a verifiable serial number you can check independently using the steps above.
  • Every core product is backed by an importer-backed warranty, handled in-house — we manage your repair and support directly rather than routing you elsewhere.
  • Our team can help you interpret the manufacturer’s verification page, including the region/registration nuance noted above, so you’re not left guessing.
